The postmarketOS governance has evolved through the years. In this talk we will analyze how we got to where we are, and what is laid ahead of us.
The postmarketOS governance passed through multiple stages. An initial team was assembled, roles where created, and people that put a lot of work organically joined the team. But that contribution model has problems to scale. In 2023 the model was changed to allow people to ask to join, leading in to a considerable growth: from 8 maintainers back then to 29 nowadays. The growth, however, has resulted in greater organizational challenges, and the initial maintainers still kept greater power than everybody else. In order to change this, a legal entity has been created, with democratic governance at heart. In order to fulfill our mission, more changes are needed, and we expect to do it in a democratic and respectful way with our ideals.
I am a member of the postmarketOS project, which has been years working on postmarketOS governance challenges. As part of that work, I have communicated extensively with members of the Alpine community, and see the success of Alpine part of our own success.
